Welcome back guys! How are you? Today I want to share my advice on pursuing a master degree and whether it really makes a difference and if it’s worth the money. So if you’re in between on pursuing for a master degree or not, here is my personal opinion on this topic.
1. Pursue a master degree because you REALLY want to
Okay so I put this first because to me that is the most important thing to ask yourself if this topic comes up. Do you really want to pursue a master degree or do you want to do it just because? I think when it comes to a master degree it is going to be highly important to enjoy it and understand the reason why you have decided to go to school instead of starting your career. A master degree is intense, in depth and it requires a lot of commitment. In my opinion, why ”waste” your time and money in something you don’t want to do right? Go for a master degree because you are passionate about a particular subject that you want to learn more about. Go for a master degree because you want get your self involved in that subject/industry and leave your mark through your final work…dissertation.
2. Required specialization
Some job positions simply require you to pursue a postgrad degree in order to be qualified for certain position like doctors. You can’t be a surgeon or even a GP without specialization (master degree). So it’s important to figure out if it is a MUST to actually have a master degree for that particular job you would like to have.
3. It makes a difference on the CV
Do some research what a master means in your field where you want to start a career in and also the country. For example I have noticed that in the Netherlands they do take your degrees you have acquired into account and based on even your degree you can negotiate in salary. In the UK, I noticed that degree matters however experience is what makes the major difference in salary for example. So you can have a master degree however that degree most of the time wouldn’t necessarily give you exception to a higher degree as relevant experience would. Due bear in mind that this varies within sectors. So looking into that is also very interesting and can enable you to make a decision whether to go for a master degree or not.
Besides these 3 things I just mentioned, there are many more that you have to look into that will determine if going for a master degree is necessary. Also, this decision is very personal as well. I did my master degree and I encourage everyone who wants to do a postgrad to do so however if you don’t have that desire to go for a master’s degree, that is absolutely fine too. I believe that having a successful career doesn’t solely depend on education. As a person, you have to be street-smart too and that’s something you don’t get to learn in school😉
So tell me, have your ever thought about doing a master’s degree? Why yes, why no? Love to hear your thoughts.
